Newly Chartered Pittsburgh Area Retiree Chapter, APWU
Please visit our new "Retiree Corner"... a subsection of our website that will grow and develop over the next year. The Chapter was founded late last year and chartered in March of this year. After the meeting at the end of the month, we hope to add a photograph of some of the members. Stay tuned!
Our newly chartered Retiree Chapter has also put together a list of our Legislators, so that any and all may find it easy to contact Senators, Congressional Representatives, or PA Statehouse members.

Employee Free Choice Act Introduced in Senate
(excerpted from APWU Web News Article #27-07)
One of the most important labor law reform measures in decades was introduced in the U.S. Senate March 29 legislation that would give American workers greater freedom to make their own choices about joining unions and bargaining for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Sen. Edward Kennedy and 46 co-sponsors introduced the Employee Free Choice Act (S. 1041), a bill that would stiffen penalties for harassment, intimidation, and other illegal tactics employers often use to prevent workers from having a voice at work.
The bill also would recognize workers' freedom to form unions when a majority of employees sign forms designating a union as their bargaining representative. This "card-check" process is permitted under current law, but only if the employer agrees. Most employers currently force workers to undergo an election administered by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which in recent years has consistently ruled against pro-union workers.

APWU Contract Officially Signed
In a ceremony March 29, APWU President William Burrus and Postmaster General John E. Potter signed the 2006-2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Their signatures formalized the agreement, which was ratified by union members in January. The specific provisions of the agreement have been agreed to, and a permanent printed version is currently being proofread and finalized for printing. The union will post a notice when copies are available.
