Postal Service Sends Out 2,400 RIF Notices
by Sean Reilly, federaltimes.com

More than 2,400 U.S. Postal Service management-level employees could lose their jobs or end up in new positions under a reduction in force set to conclude by early September.

The RIF is part of a nationwide reorganization aimed at streamlining the ranks of postmasters, front-line supervisors and administrators by 7,500 positions. Already, some 2,000 employees have signed up for $20,000 buyouts requiring them to leave by Tuesday. But since the downsizing was announced in January, postal managers had said that layoffs could also be needed for displaced staff unable to find new assignments within the agency.

Under notices mailed out Friday, 2,429 employees were told that they could lose their jobs, face demotion or have to take other jobs at the same grade by the week ending Sept. 10. USPS Spokesman Mark Saunders said he did not have specific figures Tuesday for the numbers in each category. "Those are evolving," he said.

Between June and September, affected employees will have two chances to apply for vacant jobs. Under the complicated rules governing a RIF, more workers could be affected as circumstances change, Saunders said.

In all, the reorganization is supposed to save almost $750 million each year once it's fully in place. The Postal Service is also closing eight area and district administrative offices.

Guffey Encourages Postal Veterans To Spread the Word
excerpted from APWU Web News Article 066-2011

APWU President Cliff Guffey is encouraging postal workers who have served in the armed forces to reach out to fellow veterans and encourage them to take advantage of new hiring opportunities.

In many instances, the Postal Service is obligated to hire veterans before civilians, provided they are on the appropriate hiring register, APWU President Cliff Guffey said. Veterans should be educated about the benefits of being a postal employee and encouraged to take the necessary tests to be considered for employment.

"We are proud to be able to offer employment opportunities to the thousands of men and women who serve our country in these tough economic times," Guffey said. "I ask all members to reach out to veterans who are looking for work."
