Postal Jobs Canceled in Wheeling
excerpted from The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register article by Casey Junkins

Mail leaving the Friendly City's post office after July 1 will not receive the Wheeling postmark because the U.S. Postal Service is taking its outgoing mail processing operations to Pittsburgh. After several months of discussion - as well as a public hearing where more than 100 residents and postal employees voiced strong opposition to the plan - postal service officials announced their decision regarding Wheeling's mail Tuesday.

Western Pennsylvania District Manager Charles P. McCreadie said, "We must take action to reduce the size of our mail processing network. Consolidating operations and placing our people where we need them is necessary if the postal service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation," he stated via news release. McCreadie previously said the change would save the postal service an average of $527,000 per year.

Don Bentz, president of the Wheeling Area Local of the American Postal Workers Union, fought to keep the operations in the Friendly City. The change is expected to affect six postal jobs, though Bentz said the union would likely be able to absorb these reductions without losing any personnel because there are some vacancies at the Wheeling office. "It's very disappointing," Bentz said of the postal service's decision. "We presented the facts (during the public hearing). We process mail better than Pittsburgh."

OSHA Cites USPS for 'Willful' Safety Violations
excerpted from APWU Web News Article 037-2010

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has charged the USPS in Providence, RI with 12 willful and serious safety violations, and ordered it to pay fines of $558,000. The Postal Service "ignored long-established safety standards and knowingly put its workers in harm's way," OSHA said. The violations "exposed workers at the Providence facility to the serious and potentially fatal hazards of shock, electrocution and arc-flash."

"These sizable fines reflect the severity and ongoing nature of these hazards," Dr. David Michaels, OSHA assistant secretary, said in a press release. Inspectors found untrained or unqualified workers performing tests on live electrical equipment at the Providence Processing & Distribution Center, the news release noted, generating eight citations for willful safety violations and fines of $530,000.

The remaining $28,000 in fines were associated with four citations for serious safety violations, including failing to instruct workers on the proper procedures for locking out machines' power sources to prevent unexpected startup during maintenance and related hazards. The inspection also revealed that personal protective equipment, work practices and warning signs were inadequate, OSHA said.
